CERTIFICATION

Hovland offers certification in The Conservatory Course, whether you're seeking employment as an instructor or studying for your own growth as a musician. Every Hovland instructor is certified through at least Level 3, and certification continues from there.


Certification is built on three pillars: understanding the material, playing it well, and knowing how to teach it. Each level covers all three. We hold monthly information sessions for interested teachers. Tell us you're interested below and we'll send you the details.

philosophy

Every course in every level was built for a reason. Certification starts with the why: what each skill is for, why it appears when it does, and how it connects to what comes before and after. Teachers who understand the design can teach it with conviction.

proficiency

You can't teach what you can't play. Certification requires demonstrating the technique and repertoire of each level yourself, so that every skill you assign is one you've done. Instruction comes from experience, not from the page.

pedagogy

Knowing the material isn't the same as knowing how to teach it. This is the art and science of the lesson itself: how to introduce a skill, what to do when a student struggles, and how to give feedback that produces change rather than discouragement.
